RCMP in central Newfoundland say they’ve observed several violations on the first few days of school in which children have been moved too early from booster seats into regular vehicle seat belts.

The traffic services division of the RCMP is advising people transporting children to be aware of the current regulations regarding booster seats.

According to police, a child is ready to move up to a booster seat when their shoulders cover the highest slot on the car seat or the middle of their ears are above the top of the car seat or they have reached the maximum guidelines set by the car seat manufacturer.

A child is ready to move out of their booster seat and into the vehicle seat belt when they are 80 pounds, 4 foot, nine inches ( 144.8 cm ) and at least nine years old.
