The RCMP in Placentia are warning people not to give out banking or credit card information over the phone.

The police have received a complaint from a resident of the area, who reported she had been contacted by a person identifying themselves as a police officer. The person said they were investigating fraudulent activity on the woman’s credit card and requested personal information.

The RCMP says if a police officer is investigating this type of offence, they would ask the victim to come into the office to assist in the investigation. And, should fraudulent activity occur on your credit card, your financial institution will contact you, not police.

The RCMP is advising anyone who encounters such a request to contact the police and their financial institution immediately.
