A Flatrock company and a company director/supervisor were fined for violations of the Occupational Health and Safety Act and Regulations at a construction site in St. John’s June 28.

Oceanside Roofing Inc. was fined $2,000 while the company director/supervisor was fined $1,250.

The company and the supervisor pleaded guilty to charges Sept. 7 at provincial court in St. John’s.

According to a news release, the charges arose from an inspection conducted by the Occupational Health and Safety Branch at a construction site at Castle Bridge subdivision in St. John’s.

The company was charged with failing to provide and maintain a safe workplace and failing to ensure that a fall arrest system was adequately secured to an anchorage point or lifeline. The company pleaded guilty to the latter charge, while the remaining charge was withdrawn.

The company director/supervisor had been charged with failing as a supervisor to ensure another worker wore fall protection, failing as a worker to ensure that his own fall arrest system was secured to an anchorage point or lifeline, and failing as a worker to use the fall arrest system provided.

The supervisor pleaded guilty to the first two charges, and was fined $750 as a supervisor and $500 in his role as a worker. The third charge was withdrawn.
