Residents in the towns of Gambo and Glovertown, and on the Eastport Peninsula, are being advised of recent black bear sightings in the area.
The Department of Natural Resources is encouraging residents to take appropriate steps to avoid attracting bears into their communities and backyards, where the animals can pose a risk to public safety.
A news release notes that residents can assist by properly storing, collecting, and disposing of garbage. Garbage stored in open, wooden garbage boxes for days or even overnight is one of the most significant causes of bear/human interactions.
If anyone encounters a bear, they are reminded to: remain calm; give the animal space; back away slowly and do not run; avoid eye contact with the bear; and, remove any garbage or food that may have attracted the animal.
Anyone sighting a black bear in these areas is asked to contact the Natural Resources office in Gambo at 709-647-1521. Sightings can also be reported to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police Detachment at 709-533-2828.
