Newfoundland and Labrador has launched a new climate change public awareness campaign.

Titled “Turn Back the Tide,” it includes television, online and print media promotional material.

According to a news release, the prevailing message of the initiative will focus on sea level rise and increased storm activity in the North Atlantic.

These two factors are among the most serious threats facing Newfoundland and Labrador due to climate change, said Terry French, minister responsible for the Office of Climate Change, Energy Efficiency and Emissions Trading.

The campaign is an effort to educate the public on how it can help combat these changes, said French.

In an effort to concentrate that message, the entire campaign is directing the public to one website, www.TurnBackTheTide.ca.

“A critical foundation for success is supporting better awareness and providing people with the right tools and information to take action, so I am extremely pleased with the campaign we have launched today,” said French.

“We all have an important role to play in raising awareness and supporting action, from adapting to the impacts of climate change, to being more energy-efficient in our homes, at work, and how we travel.”

I'm encouraged that this Conservative government acknowledges current climate reality and is promoting citizen preparedness. Contrast that with the Conservative Party of Canada and the Republicans.

Funny how there coming out with this now, if Muskrat goes ahead, us being concerned over our energy needs will only lead to more run-off from MuskRat, this is the part of the project that will drive up our electricty bills, the run-off. Don't make sence to me.

What a bunch of baloney! I just visited the site, it looks pretty and aesthetic, but it means nothing and it will change nothing. The PC's are suggesting that we'll all float away into oblivion and drown with climate change? They suggest that we need to be more energy efficient (and I agree that we do), yet they offer no government incentives or programs (other than the lame retrofit program that already exists). Do they think that this marketing campaign ill change people's actions? It takes a bit more than a fancy website and fear mongering. Oh, and did anyone notice the constant mention of "we need Muskrat Falls" in there and the reference to wind turbines in the TV ad (Windturbines that the PC's won't even consider!) This is a joke and a waste of taxpayer dollars!
