Mining companies with projects in this province are set to present their latest updates to potential investors at a Mining Industry NL conference at the Sheraton Hotel in St. John’s this week.
Executive director of Mining Industry NL Gerry O’Connell said the conference also offers a chance for companies — from junior exploration teams to corporate executives from larger industry players — to interact and discuss their work.
For investors, there are the company presentations on active projects and prospects, but also an opportunity to speak directly with investment prospects on any points of concern or get clarification on information directly from the source.
In addition to presentations, guest speakers scheduled throughout the event will take a look at broader topics relevant to industry players.
The “mercenary geologist” Mickey Fulp will speak on metal prospects and junior resource companies.
Looking across the pond, Asa Bridle of Seymour Pierce Limited is scheduled to give a presentation titled, "London Calling: Mining in the Olympic City."
As for the latest in the mining industry, O’Connell was asked about a recent drop in commodity prices, specifically iron ore.
He acknowledged the movement, but said prices are typically volatile and recent changes no cause for panic.
“If you look at copper for instance, copper has bounced back up ... The same with gold,” he said, running through some of the ups and downs in the numbers in recent weeks. “Some of them are moving up fairly quickly.”
As for iron ore, O’Connell said major players in the industry are looking at forecasts for 10 and 20 years out and not centreing decisions on the day to day pricing changes.
The outlook for iron ore, as it specifically applies to work in the Labrador Trough, will be the subject of a scheduled presentation at this week’s conference by Robin Kozar, from RBC Capital Markets.
Leonard Melman, author of the Melman Minutes (themelmanreport.com) will address: “Metals Price Forecast for the Second Half of 2012 and Beyond.”
The Mining Industry NL conference (investorsforum.ca) begins with a reception this evening. Company presentations begin Tuesday morning. The Telegram will have more from the conference floor as the event progresses.
