A 24-year-old man is facing charges of possession of a drug for the purpose of trafficking, flight from police, taking a vehicle without permission, impaired driving and driving without a valid driver’s licence after an incident early Sunday in Placentia.

Placentia/Whitbourne RCMP say they attempted to stop a driver on Orcan Drive to check the vehicle’s registration, but when they activated their emergency equipment, the driver refused to stop.

In a news release, the RCMP said the driver attempted to flee for about five minutes, by turning onto side streets and increasing his speed. Eventually, the vehicle came to a stop in Ferndale. But, prior to stopping, police officers said they observed the driver throw two plastic bags out the window of the vehicle.

The bags were later recovered and found to contain 15 grams of cocaine. Police also learned the car had just been reported stolen by the owner.

The driver was arrested and taken to the Placentia detachment of the RCMP where he was held overnight and appeared in court in the morning. He was released to appear again on Nov. 13 to answer to several charges in relation to the incident.

The RCMP is continuing its investigation and is asking anyone with information about this incident to contact the Placentia detachment at 709-227-2000 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS(8477).
