Justice Minister Felix Collins says his department has received an external peer review of psychiatric services for corrections in Newfoundland and Labrador.
The minister said in a news release, the review was received on Wednesday and his department is now reviewing it.
“The health of all inmates in our correctional facilities is of the utmost priority,” Collins said.
Following the 2011 report by the Office of the Citizens’ Representative on psychiatric prescribing practices at the province’s correctional facilities, the minister requested a peer review be completed by a psychiatrist with forensic psychiatry experience and an understanding of corrections.
The aim of the review was to determine whether inmates at the province’s correctional facilities are receiving appropriate psychiatric treatment.
Collins said Thursday once the review of the report is complete, he will be available to provide further comment.

The Telegram would happily link to the report if it had been released, but it is still being reviewed by the minister of justice. Hopefully it will be released to the public soon.
