Filmmaker/actor Mark O’Brien of St. John’s has won the award for Best Atlantic Short at the Atlantic Film Festival, for his film “Better People.”
O’Brien — best known for playing Des on CBC-TV’s “Republic of Doyle” — wrote and directed the 10-minute short film, and stars in it alongside his real-life fiancée, actress Georgina Reilly. The film explores the idea of love at first sight.
Before screening at the Atlantic Film Festival, “Better People” played at the Montreal World Film Festival, earlier this month. It will also screen at the St. John’s Women’s International Film Festival in October.
As part of the award, O’Brien was presented with a cash prize of $500 along with $1,000 in film post-production services from Halifax-based 902 Post.
O’Brien’s last short film, “Kathy,” won the William F. White Award for Best Comedy at the Lakeshorts International Short Film Festival in April.
Started in 1981 in St. John’s, the 32nd Atlantic Film Festival wrapped up in Halifax Thursday night, after eight days of film screenings, workshops and industry events.
