Advanced Education and Skills Minister Joan Burke says she’ll be reviewing a Bell Island adult education program after questions have been raised by the Opposition about PC MHA David Brazil’s direct involvement in government funding going to it.

Documents provided to The Telegram show in the past year Brazil has been directly involved in aspects of an adult literacy program, in one case signing a teacher’s record of employment, and in another instance agreeing to pay someone several dozen beer in exchange for installing programs on classroom computers.

Burke said the issues only came to her attention in the 24 hours prior to Friday.

She said anytime there is an allegation a community agency is not operating as funded, a review is done.

It’s expected to be clewed up next week, she said.

Burke said the contract is up for renewal and the results of the review will determine if that happens or not.

“We will look at it and see if the conditions and expectations are being followed,” Burke said.

Before he was elected as the MHA for Conception Bay East-Bell Island, Brazil was heavily involved in community organizations, including hockey.

He helped get an adult literacy program off the ground on Bell Island, and when they couldn’t find a community non-profit group to sponsor it, he arranged for the Bell Island Junior Blues hockey team to step up.

In an October 2011 news release, the provincial government announced funding for community-based adult literacy programs across the province, including $121,000 to a “Bell Island Adult Education Association” but it makes no mention of any hockey organization.

The team has been defunct for several years, but as recently as earlier this year, a teacher named Glenn Brazil — no relation to David — was still getting paid with cheques marked Bell Island Junior Blues.

The Bell Island Senior Blues are still an active team, and David Brazil told The Telegram, the Junior Blues cheques are for the same bank account. He said even though the team isn’t active, there’s no sense in ordering new cheques.

As for the beer, Brazil said they paid somebody in beer to install computer programs. But, he said, the hockey team is sponsored by a beer company, so beer is one of the few things they have plenty of to barter with.

The Telegram is not going to write anything positive about anybody on the government side of the House of Assembly. I recently read an article where Russell Wangersky was applauding Tom Osbourne's kindness by buying groceries for a constituency barbeue. Strangely, however, it was only after Mr. Osbourne crossed the floor that this act of kindness was worth reporting.

Very well said Ed Kent! People of Bell Island are their own worst enemies. Dave Brazil is a very proud Bell Islander and Newfoundlander. The program setup by Mr. Brazil has helped many Bell Islanders move ahead in life and has allowed many of them to gain employment and to provide for their families. It has also enabled "others" to work on Bell Island. It's unfortunate when someone goes above and beyond and in the end gets shafted. The telegram should write an article on the good things David Brazil has done for the people of Bell Island and the Community as a whole and time for "other" to get help.

For Ed Kent...."Unemployed welfare recipents who rebuilt their lives over the past 5 years through this collaborative effort with the wabana Town Council" such bull crap...... and not only bull crap but degrading to any Income Support receiptents (Not welfare receipents) as you so call those people. Mr. Kent all residents of Bell Island know full well what you are about "only what you can get from the island" retired and on the backs of taxpayers of Bell Island you manage to wingle your way into a high paying job with the Town of wabana unnoticed to many Bell Islanders. So keep your comments to yourself when you refer to Welfare receipents as I was one of those hard working students who by the way credit myself for the hard work and determination and not the Town Council nor Mr. Brazil.

Perhaps the beer distributor this government appointed Chair of Nalcor and Hydro is supplying the beer. Joan Burke is not fooling anyone!

Time for Mr. Brazil to get a visit from the Auditor General. Something stinks here.

Like most newspapers, The Telegram follows a style guide for spellings and capitalization. The Telegram adheres to Canadian Press style, which dictates the spellings we use — colour instead of color, for example, and centre instead of center. "Clew" is the appropriate spelling of the word for this usage, according to Canadian Press style.

Writing cheques from an organization that is no longer active? Then again, it is Burke who is investigating this issue so I really don't expect anything to come of it. The "Harperesque" style of Governing continues

It seems like government can't win with you. Would you rather that Burke didn't investigate the allegations? All Yvonne Jones did by making this an issue was to polarize his constituents against his attackers, ensuring that he'll get elected next time around. I wonder will the Telegram give as much ink to her apology as it did to her accusation?

From " Informed " The David Brazil MHA story today on adult education served one good purpose'. It disclosed yet another significant intitiative by one the strongest community advocates and community minded MHA's we have in our legislature . David Brazil in his pre MHA days saved and built not only one of the best adult education programs in the Province for which he has received private acclaim but the unemployed welfare recipents who rebuilt their lives over the past 5 years through this collaborative effort witht the Wabana Town Council and Davids organization now have pride and jobs and are not dependent on the state for income support We need more of this .Praise and commendation are in order as opposed to smear tactics by a disgruntled ex-employee struggling with an addiction and lashing out in anger and frustration at Dave's expense . New headline is in order
