A woman became an instant hero when she stopped a runaway stroller with a child in it on Hamlyn Road in St. John’s Thursday.
“I’m really pleased that I saved that little girl,” said Elizabeth Buckley, 51.
Buckley was walking her eight-year-old grandson, Cody, home from school when a stroller careened down the hill toward them, headed for the intersection of Canada Drive and Hamlyn Road.
“I heard a big scream and I see a little one in a carriage coming toward me,” said Buckley.
She said the child’s mother was frantic.
“She was running after the carriage hoping to get to it,” Buckley said.
Buckley jumped out and used her body to stop the stroller, which knocked her to the ground.
“I’m still a bit sore and shaken,” she said Friday.
She suffered minor injuries, including scrapes and bruises, and was treated by paramedics on the scene.
Buckley said the girl’s mother threw her arms around her in gratitude.
“She came over and thanked me and cried,” she said.
The RNC said the child, a five-year-old girl, jumped into the stroller on her own and family members tried to stop her. Thankfully, no one was seriously injured and the mother of the child, who wished to remain unnamed, said Friday the little girl is OK.
She said she is very thankful to the woman who saved her daughter’s life.
