The final charge laid in connection with this incident is listed by the RCMP as "overcoming resistance to commission of an offence."

A follow up inquiry with the RCMP shows that this uncommon charge is usually laid in instances where there has been a chocking attack. It means that the attacker continued the attack despite the victim fighting to get away.

A Deer Lake woman was attacked in that community today while she was out for a morning walk.

Local RCMP is calling the incident a random act of violence.

Police say a 36-year-old man of no fixed address has been arrested in connection to the attack. He has been charged with numerous breaches of court orders, assault, assault with a weapon, uttering threats, obstructing an officer and one other charge that was unclear in the press release.

According to police, the woman, 56, was walking on Main Street in Deer Lake when someone came up behind her and put their arm around her neck in an attempt to choke her.

She was able to free herself and flag down a passing motorist for help.

RCMP arrested the suspect at the scene and he is being held in custody until a bail hearing Monday morning.

Newfoundland is starting to be more like the U.S. with every news story. Here in the States, I carry a Glock .40 caliber in my handbag just to go to the grocery store. I'd rather be back home in Newfoundland, but from what I've been reading in the Telegram and seeing on NTV, it doesn't seem any safer up home anymore. People getting attacked while on a morning walk, knifed while at the ATM machine, robbed while working at the general store counter, murdered and dismembered and left in the woods....... What a shame. Well....that's what you get when you raise your kids under a liberal format with underpinnings of ineffectual social political correctness.

And you wouldn't be able to legally carry a 40mm Glock semi automatic revolver in your purse while in Newfoundland. Call the RCMP.
