The Telegram website offers only a sample of the stories our reporters, editors and photographers work hard to get to the public every day.
Wednesday’s print edition of The Telegram, on the other hand, contains much, much more, from news to opinion to our expanded Business section.
• Eastern Health CEO Vickie Kaminski has offered an apology to the family of a young man killed on the TCH. Kaminski made the comments during Eastern Health’s AGM Tuesday night. The man was hit by a transport truck on the TCH after he fled an ambulance taking him to St. John’s.
• The CBC is marching onwards, despite budget cuts, CEO Hubert Lacroix told the broadcaster’s annual public meeting, held Tuesday in St. John’s. “CBC/Radio-Canada will need to devise new ways that will allow it to be the first place that Canadians think of when it comes to Canadian experience, Canadian culture and Canadian democratic life. That’s our goal,” Lacroix said. “Anything short of that isn’t good enough.”
• Gas sniffing is still a major problem in Natuashish, so much so a small group of mothers have to put their children son into foster care in Ontario in a desperate attempt to help them kick the habit. “It’s not that we don’t want our kids with us,” Virginia Collins said. “I love my son and I miss him, but I have to do what’s best for him.”
• It’s been a year and a half since Adam Blanchard started Five Brothers Artisan Cheese in St. John’s. In that time he’s gone from making a little cheese on the side to lining up contracts with some of the top local restaurants. “It’s been unbelievable to have these chefs get a hold of you and say, ‘Why don’t you come on in and have a chat, because I’d love to have your product on my menu.’ … It seems like everyone’s working together to make everything food-wise in this city take off,” said Blanchard, who can be found at the farmers’ market “95 per cent of the time,” selling his wares, which he makes in the production facility he opened earlier this year.
