Liberal critic for advanced education and skills Andrew Parsons said Wednesday employees at the College of the North Atlantic (CNA) campus in Qatar are worried about their future amid rumours another college will get the contract.

This province’s contract with Qatar ends August 2013.Parsons said  a number of sources at CNA in Qatar have told the Liberals the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology (SAIT) is being awarded the contract.

A spokeswoman for SAIT said Thursday she could find no indication the school is even talking with Qatari officials about taking over the contract.

SAIT does have a contract to provide educational services to Kandahar, Afghanistan.

“My understanding is there is no discussions here. It might be another institution they have mixed up,” the spokeswoman said when asked about Qatar.

Premier Kathy Dunderdale similarly said that she’s not aware of anything.

She said a new contract was recently signed with Qatar to continue operating at the campus, and as far as she’s concerned, there’s no plan to shut down operations any time soon.

“This is news to me if it’s so. It’s not anything that I’ve been briefed on,” she told reporters.

Just confirm or deny, MHA says

Parsons said he just wants government to confirm or deny the rumours.

He said given all the controversy in the past over internal management issues at the campus, it’s understandable employees are uneasy. But he still sees the 10-year-old campus as a success story.“I hope there is a contract signed,” Parsons said. “People working there deserve to know.”Obviously, he said, the employees — thousands of miles from home — aren’t getting the information they need from their bosses.

According to a news release late Wednesday from Advanced Education and Skills Minister Joan Burke, contract talks are continuing with Qatari officials. The current contract originally scheduled to end Aug. 31, 2012, had been extended to Aug. 31, 2013.

No indication of change“While we continue discussions to secure a long-term arrangement with the State of Qatar, we have been given no indication that the current contract with College of the North Atlantic has been awarded to another institution,” Burke said.

“Contract negotiations are ongoing and it is the hope of this government that they will result in a contract that provides benefits to both the people of Qatar through the college and the people of Newfoundland and Labrador.

Kathy Dunderdale via VOCM when she indicated the contract has been renewed "if the contract is not renewed, it will be news to her" Joan Burke via a press release “...we continue discussions to secure a long-term arrangement with the State of Qatar..." One hand does not know what the other hand is doing. 9 months until employees leave and counting...

The negotiations started over three years ago so that employees would not have to sign less than three year contracts. Remember that it is a very big deal to move to the middle east. Think of culture chock, threat of political unrest, language barriers, the desert, and much more. Every employee hired there now has less than a one year contract. This attracts the wrong type of employee and means huge turnover. If it has been three years of "negotiations" and nothing has been signed, that means one thing, a problem, a big problem. What is the problem? Or is the decision to leave already defacto and they are avoiding announcing it due to the bad press it will generate? This is a common strategy with bad news.

No news is bad news. They were supposed to have this signed up almost three years as I recall it. Think about the situation they are now in. There are over 700 employees who should be looking for the exit gate now. When the College does finish the contract, they will simply say "we made no promise to you of another contract. All the best to you". Anyone who thinks any differently is wrong. Once that happens you will have to leave Qatar since you can;t stay without an employer. Good news, population of NL will jump up a bit as they all come home and create a bit more demand for Muskrat Falls. Maybe that is a the real plan!

I spoke to an instructor there last night. He says they have been given no indication of a contract renewal. How is it that the employees there know nothing about this. Are they expected to look for work here now or hold on until an announcement is made? It aint so easy to pack up and continue to move halfway across the globe.

The Liberals are just so sad...so utterly pathetic. On the Here and Now news last night they said they contacted the school in Alberta that this dupe mentioned...they said they know nothing about anything in Quatar...so would Mr. parsons put his job on the line to defend this fear mongering? Oh no...goy to keep on padding that pension. This guy is one of the biggest embarrasments to a descimated liberal party...

We can't continue to support the mismanagement of this project. CNA has gotten their money off the backs of the employees and must pay it back now. The a@se is gone right out of this one now. I think the toxic workplace still exists there even today.

The liberals are fearmongering again, the don't have a plan to give the people and the ony thing they know how to do is try and spread false rumors they are a party without a leader and a plan. Even if there was something to the "rumor" isn't that the way the way buisness operates by getting the best deal they can or is the Lib govt suggesting that ther taxpayers subsidise this . Get someone with common sense in the lib. govt.

If the Premier does no know what is going on with this major project then I would not take that as a good sign. She clearly said a new contract was signed and then had to be corrected by the department of Education. I know many people who are working at CNAQ and spent some time there myself. They currently have dozens of employees put up in hotels since there are no accommodations for them, they have many employees with little or no workloads and morale is absolutely in the dumper. The State of Qatar has lost all faith in CNA to manage this school. It is only due to the hard work of a few dedicated employees in Qatar that the place keeps running as well as it has. I have never seen a place where so many employees are upset and so afraid to speak out in fear of losing their jobs. It seems that CNA has left their Canadianness behind when they started this place. If they do sign up again, the State will be demanding many big changes. There is no way they will ever let CNA get away with this stuff in the future. Good luck to them!
