RNC Chief Robert Johnston has had a lot of disturbing cases come across his desk over the years but he told reporters on Monday that even he was surprised by an incident at Mount Pearl Square over the weekend.

“I’m here today to talk about this incident as a chief of police and as a parent,” said Johnston.

“I’m appalled by what had taken place with this person with disabilities. This vulnerable person in our community,” he said.

“All of us, we have a responsibility to protect the most vulnerable in our community.”

The RNC confirmed today that five young people have been arrested in connection with an assault and robbery on Friday.

The youths range in age from 14 to 17 and consist of two males and three females.

According to the RNC, the group allegedly lured a 24-year-old male, who has a physical disability, away from the parking lot at Sobey's Square (now Mount Pearl Square), in Mount Pearl. The victim was led into a wooded area where the group jumped him. He was assaulted and his valuables were taken.

The victim went to a nearby store for help and called the RNC. He was later treated in hospital for non-life threatening injuries.

All of the suspects have been charged with conspiracy to commit an indictable offence and robbery with violence. One of the females was also charged with breaching two court orders.

All five have ben remanded into custody and will appear again in youth court on Monday.

The RNC is asking anyone with information regarding this case to come forward. Anyone who might have been in the area at the time is also asked to contact the police. Information can be passed along by calling the RNC Major Crime Unit at 729-8000 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477). Information can also be submitted online at www.nlcrimestoppers.com.

@Heather... Really??? Did you actually say those words?? If you or anybody else can come up with any kind of an attempt at an excuse for these maggots, are just as stupid and/or nuts as the suspects themselves. Luring a disabled person in the woods with 4 other people is a sorry excuse for looking for a friend. You said you know of much worse things that go on around Newfoundland. Unless you're talking about a dismembered body, or child pornography, or things at that level of disgust, shut you mouth please.

To assult and rob someone is malious, but to do it to a disabled person is taking the crime to a new low.I think their names should be published. In this way the public could be aware of those hoods.

TO ATTACK A HUMAN BEING WITH A DISABILITY, I AM WONDERING IF THESE KIDS ARE NOT ALREADY IN THE SYSTEM, THEY USUALLY CLING TOGETHER IN GROUPS WHEN LIVING AWAY FROM THEIR FAMILIES, EITHER WAY, IT IS SO WRONG ON ALL COUNTS, THEY WILL GET PREDISOPSITON, PROBATION, COMMUNITY SERVICE, EXCEPT FOR THE LEADER THERE WHO ALREADY HAVE PREVIOUS BREACHES, PARENTS SHOULD BE ALLOWED TO DISCIPLINE THEIR CHILDREN WITHOUT USING VIOLENCE, I WAS A SINGLE PARENT AND MY CHILDREN ARE NO WORSE FOR WEAR, AND WHAT NO I WILL SAY WHY WERE THEY ROBBING , TO FEED A DRUG HABIT THAT HAS BEEN INTRODUCED TO THEM, WE ARE GETTTING WARNINGS EVERYWHERE ABOUT CHILDREN BEING LURED INTO TRYING THIS CANDY AND ITS GETS THEM HIGH, THE GOVERNMENT IS TO BLAME HERE BECAUSE OF THEIR STUPID RULES AND REGULATIONS THAT HELP THE CRIMINALS AND DO NOTHING FOR THE INNOCENT. THIS SHOULD BE AN ALARMING WAKE UP CALL THAT ALL PARTS OF THE GOVERNMENT NEEDS TO WAKE THE HELL UP AND LEARN FROM THIS, GLAD THAT POOR VICTIM WASNT KILLED, AND PLEASE FIND OUT HOW MANY OF THOSE ATTACKERS ARE ALREADY IN A SYSTEM THAT ARE SEPARATING THE FAMILIES, LEAVING KIDS WITH NO GUIDANCE JUST SOMEONE GETTING A PAYCHECK, BET YOU I AM RIGHT ON ALL COUNTS, IF NOT WE ALL KNOW WHERE THE PROBLEM LIES

Actually, some of the people that did this were my friends. You do not know these people personally so attacking them over the internet is just a low, maybe not near to the extent as this .. but it is still very low. The " leader " as you say may be a bad case and i can tell you that personally because i know her. She has dealt with a lot in her life growing up which yes i know is no excuse. Her mother isn't a bad mother at all. So to attack they're parents is stupid on your part. One of the guys just wants friends and goes with what's "cool " by all means this was not cool what so ever. For the other two girls they just do things to fit in and have friends. Stupid yes i agree but i am a 17 year old and i know how hard it is to grow up not having friends and just wanting some, and for the last guy if you met him and knew him personally you'd never expect him to be involved in such a thing, he has a job and goes to school, Does anything for anybody. Yes teenagers are crazy now a days. I've heard so much worst stuff going on here in Newfoundland and for you to attack these kids the way you did is just plain crazy, they made a choice in they're life that they can never undo and trust me, they regret everything they have done. They ain't in the criminal system except for 1, and for the most part they have good parents. So maybe next time you go on the internet and blab your mouth, think twice. Maybe you need to grow up just as much as they do. And look twice in the mirror.

My heart is absolutely broken :( This young man that these cowards lured and beat up is an amazing young guy, who wears his heart on his sleeve. I had the pleasure of meeting him this summer at my uncles wedding and let me just say, he made my night! we danced the night away and had a blast!! One of the nicest people I have ever met. It sickens me to hear what these low life scum bags have done. They should be ashamed, embarressed and disgusted with themselves, and so should the parents of these good for nothing loser teenagers. If i were the parent of one of these disgusting human beings, they wouldnt have to worry about being charged, because they would be beat, with my two hands! I hope they get what they deserve, lock them up and treat them like the peices of S*#T that they are. I bet everyone of those A-holes already had previopus charges, this one will just add to the list! SICK SICK SICK .

Five against one --and the one has a physical disability at that. I'm sure that those 5 wanna-be thugs think they are real tough. I'm sure their parents are very proud of them. Law abiding citizens can only hope these wee punks will leave NL and try their cowardly 'skills' against real gang members in a large city far away from here.

this goes to show that common sense is not that common. never realized that it takes 5 people to rob one disabled person. i hope these kids dont just get community service for this, but have to do therapy, and work with people with disabilites to learn compassion.

Don't hold your breath for any penalties for these individuals from the courts.... I'm guessing the judge will likely let them perform a song and dance act, maybe even a little rap and break dancing too... The judicial system is a joke and those commit crimes know it and manipulate it, while the rest of us pay the price, like the victim in this case

These people should have their names and pictures, as well as their parents names published so as others will be protected from falling for their trap in the future and I hope the courts give them a strong sentence.

Absolutely! I definitely do not agree with the whole "protecting their identity" bull crap! Show us who these meatheads are! And their parents! I'm sure the parents would be embarrassed if they were publicly ridiculed for their parenting skills.
