Telegram editorial page editor Russell Wangersky has made the Scotiabank Giller Prize shortlist.

Wangersky made the list for “Whirl Away,” a collection of short stories, along with four other authors: Will Ferguson for “419,” Alix Ohlin for “Inside,” Nancy Richler for “The Imposter Bride,” and Kim Thuy, for “Ru.”

“Whirl Away is a marvelous collection of stories,” the Giller jury wrote in their citation. “Each story stands starkly and wonderfully alone. Some of them carry a very quick thump; others have the scope, the extra pages that allow a glimpse at longer lives. Regrets, mistakes, accidents — the stories are full of them and their consequences. They are full of people trying to cope, trying to change, trying to live. They are stories of lives close to breaking, written with great confidence and skill.”

This is Wangersky’s second time vying for the Giller Prize — his short story collection, “The Hour of Bad Decisions,” made the longlist in 2006.

The Scotiabank Giller Prize comes with a $50,000 top award, with $5,000 for each of the finalists. The winner will be announced Oct. 30.

A big congratulations. I was going to read the DFW bio by DT Max next but I think Whirl Away just jumped the queue.
