Driver with $29,000 in fines faces additional charges

The Royal Newfoundland Constabulary nabbed a driver owing a lot in fines in the downtown St. John’s area around 11 p.m. Wednesday.

When the 27-year-old was pulled over on Water Street. officers found that he owed $29,000 in outstanding fines.

He was charged with no licence, no insurance, driving an unregistered vehicle and having false licence plates on it.

He was held for court this morning and his vehicle was impounded.

    It's a flawed system, esp (fines). Most people that get serve fines are either businesses (where kinda works) or people who can't afford them. Then they never seem to put you in jail for not paying fines so people just build them up not show up for court dates etc.

    I still baffles my mind that people can get away with owing large amounts for outstanding fines. If you owe $ 50 to Revenue Canada, they will attach either your wages, bank account, pension income or whatever is available to get their money. Somebody is not doing their job !!!
