The Royal Newfoundland Constabulary (RNC) is participating in a national traffic education and enforcement initiative throughout the province this weekend.
“Operation Impact” will take place over four days, Oct. 5 to 8, including the Thanksgiving long weekend, as an increase in the volume of traffic on our highways increases the potential for more traffic collisions.
The initiative is an annual collaborative effort by Canadian police services aimed at aggressively enforcing the laws that govern high risk activities of road users and making Canada’s roads the safest in the world.
The focus this year will be on behaviors that reduce risks for drivers, passengers and other road users such as sober and alert driving, as well as seat belt use, distracted and aggressive driving.
"Impaired and distracted driving and overall unsafe driving practices is a concern and continued focus of the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary,” said RNC Chief Robert Johnston. "This national initiative is in keeping with the RNC priority of ensuring road safety and is a direct response to the kind of devastation that can result from unsafe driving practices.”
The RNC will be enforcing the Highway Traffic Act by conducting road side stops and traffic safety stops. The RNC says officers will be out in full force at key locations to provide enforcement and remind people that safe driving habits save lives and reduce injuries on our roadways.
