The Telegram website offers only a sample of the stories our reporters, editors and photographers work hard to get to the public every day.

Friday’s print edition of The Telegram, on the other hand, contains much, much more, from news to opinion to our expanded A&E section.

• Halfway through the fiscal year, it looks like the provincial government is on track for a deficit of more than half a billion dollars. A strong Canadian dollar and low oil prices seem to be to blame, but the province’s most prominent economist is saying that unless Finance Minister Tom Marshall makes big changes, it’s starting to look like the government is getting into structural deficits.

• It’s going to cost even more coin for the City of St. John’s than it originally thought to change its meters to conform to the new loonies and toonies issued in April by the Canadian Mint.

But on the upside, says Downtown

St. John’s, the organization that represents downtown businesses, parking options for the area will become more technologically advanced.

• Michael Evoy’s ready to launch. The owner of the new Goulds-based Vixon magazine is due to bring out the first issue early next month.

“It’s a fashion magazine, really, but we do have pop culture into it, and we do have mostly local stuff into it, to keep everyone entertained and show off Newfoundland talents,”

• The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) has released another lengthy list of more than 100 beef cuts that are being recalled as part of the ongoing

XL Foods E. coli investigation.

The latest list includes President’s Choice  (PC) steaks sold nationally and labelled as petite tender beef smokin’ stampede and tender beef Montreal-style spice with best before dates between Oct. 4 and 19. A full list is available at www.inspection.gc.ca.
