The 23rd St. John’s International Women’s Film Festival will happen next week, with a focus on feature-length films rather than shorts.
The festival will open Tuesday evening with “Midnight’s Children,” a feature by Oscar-nominated actor Deepa Mehta, adapted from a book by Salman Rushdie. Mehta will attend the festival’s opening night red-carpet event.
Closing night will feature three local pieces: Jordan Canning’s award-winning “Seconds,” Ruth Lawrence’s “Two Square Feet,” starring Jeanne Beker, and Justin Simms’ “Hard Light,” which uses Michael Crummey’s collection of poems and short stories of the same name to examine Newfoundland and its people.
Other films to be screened include Barbara Doran’s “Life Below Zero,” and “Winners,” by writer/director Elsa Morena.
The festival, one of the longest-running women’s film festivals in the world, received nearly 500 submissions this year; 45 of those films will be screened.
The week will also include lunchtime screenings, workshops, pitch sessions and other opportunities, the majority of them open to the public, and some of them free. Tickets for regular screenings are $12 ($10 for seniors and students), and MUN Cinema screening tickets are $10 ($9 for seniors and students). Festival passes are available for $100 ($75 for seniors and students).
