The International Brotherhood Of Electrical Workers (IBEW) has decided to cancel meetings scheduled to take place later this month in St. John’s in order to support the cause of local airport workers.

Approximately 85 members of the Union of Canadian Transportation Employees local 90916 have been involved in a legal strike for one month. They had been working without a contract since 2009.

“The union people are union people,” said Will John Doyle, business manager for IBEW Local 2330. “We support each other in our struggles, and it’s against everything I believe in to cross a unionized picket line.”

Union leaders from across Canada were scheduled to meet at the Delta St. John's Hotel and Conference Centre from Oct. 22-26, but Doyle said those meetings will be rescheduled.

According to previous reports, striking workers at St. John’s International Airport have not received a wage increase in four years. Essential safety and security staff involved in the strike remain on the job as part of a maintenance-of-service agreement between the union and the airport authority.

Thank God we have the unions to stand up for the average worker. If all businesses could just fire workers and hire new ones for less....wouldn't we be someone close to Columbia. It's difficult to find workers now, why should we continue to be treated like serfs to the fish merchants.

Unions are only to support their big shots. I wonder every time if the big shots are living on strike pay like the people they dragged out on the picket line - not likely. Unions were needed years ago but they are now a menace to the economy now. Every time they get a raise, they are forcing the price of everything. DOWN WITH UNIONS

Just another notch in the "collective extortion process".
