The International Brotherhood Of Electrical Workers (IBEW) has decided to cancel meetings scheduled to take place later this month in St. John’s in order to support the cause of local airport workers.
Approximately 85 members of the Union of Canadian Transportation Employees local 90916 have been involved in a legal strike for one month. They had been working without a contract since 2009.
“The union people are union people,” said Will John Doyle, business manager for IBEW Local 2330. “We support each other in our struggles, and it’s against everything I believe in to cross a unionized picket line.”
Union leaders from across Canada were scheduled to meet at the Delta St. John's Hotel and Conference Centre from Oct. 22-26, but Doyle said those meetings will be rescheduled.
According to previous reports, striking workers at St. John’s International Airport have not received a wage increase in four years. Essential safety and security staff involved in the strike remain on the job as part of a maintenance-of-service agreement between the union and the airport authority.
