Driver faces long list of charges including flight from police

A driver who reportedly attempted to flee from police Wednesday night has ended up with a long list of charges under the Highway Traffic Act and Criminal Code.

According to the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary, street patrol officers attempted to stop a vehicle on New Gower Street in St. John’s around 11:24 p.m., but the driver wouldn’t stop.

Police caught up with the vehicle at the intersection of Queen Street and New Gower Street and charged the driver with flight From police under the Criminal Code, driving under suspension, driving without a valid driver’s licence, diving without a valid insurance policy and failing to change ownership of vehicle. Police said the driver also owes $8,557 in outstanding fines and was charged under the Controlled Drug and Substance Act for possession of cocaine.

The accused was held for court in the morning and the vehicle was impounded.
