A 21-year-old man from Nain has been charged with assault, uttering threats, resisting arrest and two charges of breaching court orders, arising from an early morning incident in which police say a woman was thrown down stairs outside a home.
The RCMP in the Labrador community responded to a complaint around 12:15 a.m. today that a 22-year-old woman had been thrown down the stairs and the male suspect was still in the area.
But, according to police, the male suspect immediately fled on foot and hit in an area behind the residence when they arrived on the scene. He was apprehended after a short foot chase and was taken into custody.
The RCMP said their investigation, to date, revealed that the man had been in the residence and threatened to assault the victim with a stick, he then allegedly pushed the victim down the stairs and when she tried to get up, stood on the victim's back.
Police say alcohol is believed to be a factor in the incident.
The suspect was held in custody and was expected to appear in court today for a bail hearing.
