A man is facing charges, including assault with a weapon, uttering threats and property damage arising from a domestic disturbance Thursday night in the Leslie Street area of St. John’s.
Members of the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary were called to the area around 7:30 p.m. where two women were reportedly assaulted by a man.
Fire department and ambulance personnel were also on the scene but medical attention was not required.
The man was arrested and detained for a court appearance today.
The RNC responded to 178 calls for service over 24 hours from early Thursday morning to Friday morning.
Some of these calls involved the following traffic collisions:
• Members of the RNC responded to a two-vehicle collision around 6:59 a.m. Thursday at the intersection of Allandale Road and Prince Philip Drive.
Police say a backhoe heading east on Prince Philip Drive was attempting to turn onto Allandale Road when it collided with a white van which was also eastbound.
Fortunately there were no injuries, but both vehicles received moderate damage and were removed from the scene.
• Around 11:55 a.m. Thursday, the RNC responded to a two-vehicle collision at Mundy Pond Road and Blackmarsh Road involving a City of St John's van and a school bus occupied only by the driver. Police say there was moderate damage to the vehicles involved and one minor injury.
• Around 1:37 p.m., the RNC responded to a two-vehicle, rear-end collision on Prince Phillip Drive at University Avenue. According to police, there were no injuries but moderate damage to both vehicles.
Members of the RNC Major Crimes Unit, assisted by patrol division members, also arrested a 16-year-old Conception Bay South male around 11:30 a.m. Thursday in relation to a serious assault that occurred Sept 14 in the Peachytown Rd area.
Police say the youth has been charged with aggravated assault and assault with a weapon. He was held in custody until a court appearance.
Around 7:25 p.m., RNC patrol officers conducted a traffic stop on Cabot Street and found a 40-year-old driver of a Mazda Protege with a suspended licence, no insurance, expired registration and false sticker on a licence plate. The driver also had $6,400 in outstanding fines. The vehicle was impounded and the operator was held in custody until a court appearance.
Around 1:45 a.m. Friday, RNC patrol officers carried out a traffic safety stop in the area of St. Thomas Line and Topsail Road. As a result the adult male driver was given a seven-day driving suspension.
A man was also detained under the Drunk in Public Act overnight and to be released when sober.
