The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) and Starbucks Coffee Canada Inc. are warning the public not to consume Justin's brand Honey Peanut Butter Blend spread, sold in Starbucks brand Protein Bistro Box kits, because it may be contaminated with Salmonella.

The affected product is a 0.5 oz pouch bearing UPC 894455000391 and a best by date between July 14 and Aug. 8, 2013.

The Starbucks kits are 192-gram packages, bearing UPC 7 62111 88794 8 and best before dates from Sept. 29 to Oct. 7, 2012.

According to the CFIA, these pouches were distributed nationally and, to date, there have been no reported illnesses associated with them.

Food contaminated with Salmonella may not look or smell spoiled, but cit can cause salmonellosis, a foodborne illness.

The CFIA says in young children, the elderly and people with weakened immune systems, salmonellosis may cause serious and sometimes deadly infections. In otherwise healthy people, it may cause short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, vomiting, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea. Long-term complications may include severe arthritis.The retailer, Starbucks Coffee Canada Inc. in Toronto, Ont. is voluntarily recalling the affected product from the marketplace. The CFIA is monitoring the effectiveness of the recall.
