James William Lucas, 36, has been sentenced to five years in jail.

Judge James Walsh rendered his decision this morning in provincial court in St. John's.

Lucas stole six T-bone steaks on Sept. 8 from a Sobeys supermarket on Topsail Road in St. John's, slashed a store employee with a knife and threatened to kill him and a security guard if they didn't let him go.

He pleaded guilty to seven charges  — two counts each of assault with a weapon and uttering threats, and single counts of robbery with violence, possessing a weapon for a dangerous purpose and breaching an undertaking.

The Crown had asked for a jail term of no less than six years.

He got 5 yrs for needing something to eat .Yet other losers will get nothing for beating a woman and putting her in the hospital. Its time the judges woke up and took a closer look at the real criminals..........i agree with Brinos.....

Come on Kim you're smarter than that. It has nothing to do with the steaks or him being hungry. It has to do with the fact that he had a weapon, used it and threatened to kill people. In my opinion that deserves at least 5 years. If he had given himself up in the supermarket then this crime would have been classified as petty theft and not much would have happened to the guy. Think before you write Kim.

I'm with Judge Walsh all the way on this. And I didn't see anything in this story that a grade 3 lawyer asked for house arrest......and got it. They're out there!

he may have been sentence to 5 years in jail, but the die-heart liberals will cry foul and say: its cruel to put jimmy away for so long. how much of that sentence will he serve? will it be in the big house, or will he be given the honeymoon suite at the holiday inn? with 3 great meals a day, a computer, tv, and all the luxuries of home. if all the die-heart hug-a-thug liberals out there had their way jimmy would be walking by nightfall.

5 years? What's that probation in 2? I guess if he killed someone he would have only gotten 10. This isn't someone who just made a casual mistake. When you're walking around with a knife and use it to attack people then it should be a stronger penalty.

He has a criminal record beginning when he was 15; sounds like he tried to make a career out of it.

Yet a person can practically beat someone to near death and only get two years. Throw in a couple of steaks and that'll get you an additional three years. There's something totally screwed up with our justice system.

What would have sucked is if after all of this he was in jail and realized he ran out of propane the last time he bbq'd
