The Royal Newfoundland Constabulary (RNC) Child Abuse Sexual Assault Unit (CASA) is seeking the public’s assistance to identify a suspect in relation to a sexual assault near The Rooms in St. John’s.

According to police, patrol officers responded to a report of a sexual assault in the area of The Rooms parking lot shortly before 11 p.m. Tuesday. The complainant is a female.

The RNC is asking anyone in the area of The Rooms or Tim Horton’s on Harvey Road who may have witnessed this incident to contact the police.

The RNC is cautioning the public that the suspect has not been apprehended and is a safety threat. The suspect is described as possibly in his mid 50s, five feet, six inches tall with short grey hair and a medium build.

At the time of the incident he was believed to be wearing a black three-quarter length coat and black pants.

Given the sensitive nature of sex-related offences and privacy concerns regarding the identification of the female victim, the RNC said it will not be releasing any other details at this time.

Any person with information in relation to this incident is asked to contact the RNC at 729-8000 or Crime Stoppers anonymously at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477). People can also provide anonymous information on the NL Crime Stoppers website at www.nlcrimestoppers.com.
