A man suspected of sexually assaulting a teenaged girl near The Rooms in St. John's Tuesday appeared in provincial court in St. John's this afternoon.
Gerald Edmund Pike, 45, of St. John's is charged with two counts of sexual assault, theft under $5,000 for allegedly stealing property from the girl and one count of breaching probation.
While RNC would not release the age of the complainant, The Telegram has learned she is 16 years old.
Crown prosecutor William Cadigan and legal aid duty counsel Jane Fitzpatrick suggested Pike be taken to the Waterford Hospital to undergo a psychiatric assessment. Judge Greg Brown agreed.
Pike is due back in court this afternoon.

The Royal Newfoundland Constabulary (RNC) Child Abuse Sexual Assault Unit (CASA) has arrested and charged a 45-year-old St. John’s man in relation to a sexual assault near The Rooms in St. John’s, Tuesday.
According to police the man was arrested early this morning without incident and is charged with two counts of sexual assault and one count of theft. He’s expected to appear in provincial court today.
Police received a report of a sexual assault on a female Tuesday in the area of The Rooms parking lot off Harvey Road shortly before 11 p.m.
The RNC issued an advisory Wednesday asking anyone who may have witnessed the incident to contact police.
Given the sensitive nature of sex-related offences and privacy concerns regarding the identification of the female victim, the RNC said it will not be releasing any other details at this time.
Police are continuing their investigation into this incident. If the activity is that bold and obvious to neighbours, surely the problem is known to the police; RNC headquarters at Ft Townsend is located one block away! I can't help but wonder if RNC foot patrols could deter this type of activity and the daily congregation of its participants. This is why I don't venture downtown anymore.
