An alleged assault involving a chewing gum display resulted in the arrest of a 57-year-old male on Friday in St. John’s.

Gary Wells made a brief appearance at St. John’s Provincial Court Saturday morning. He has been charged with assault with a weapon, assault, two counts of theft under $5,000, and breach of an undertaking. On a separate information, Wells was charged with causing a disturbance.

The incident allegedly happened at a North Atlantic gas bar in the Hamlyn Road area of St. John’s. Staff reportedly spotted Wells attempting to steal beer from the store.

The Royal Newfoundland Constabulary reported there were no injuries.

The crown opposed Wells’ release. He was remanded in police custody, and is scheduled to return to court on Monday.
