• A recent survey of Canadian universities lists research income at Memorial University as dipping 5.8 per cent last year. MUN’s vice-president of research reads it differently. “When you first look at that, if you didn’t understand that, you might say, ‘Oh my God, they’re down,’ and in fact we know that’s not the case,” said Christopher Loomis. “If we look at the awards, not just the cash flow, but the amount of research funds that are awarded to Memorial University, they’ve been going up every year, and they’re up again this year.”
• Thursday is Max Ruelokke’s last day as head of the CNLOPB — but he can stick around a bit longer if needed. His six-year term ends Thursday but the search for his replacement isn’t finished. If asked, Ruelokke said he’ll stay on in an acting capacity. “What I’ve said is, ‘If you would like me to do that, I will do so,’ and our last board meeting is this Thursday, and they will make a decision.”
• With a 28-man roster, it would appear the St. John’s IceCaps’ coaching staff would have plenty of flexibility in lineup decisions. But we’ll remind you of that old saying about the ongoing relationship between appearances and deception. “As you always see at this level, it goes from having large numbers to having a lot of guys on the injury side,” said coach Keith McCambridge
