Checkpoint results in charges, one driver fleeing on foot

The RNC checked about 300 vehicles starting about midnight Tuesday in a vehicle safety checkpoint officers set up on Pitts Memorial Drive in the St. John’s area.

The resulted was three vehicles being impounded, two people charged with driving while suspended, two charged with operating a vehicle without a licence, one charge of having no insurance on a vehicle, as well as numerous other traffic-related offences.

One driver abandoned a vehicle in the area of the checkpoint and fled on foot.

The RNC K-9 unit was called in to search for the driver and the incident is being investigated.

The RNC responded to 181 calls for service for a 24-hour period that ended early this morning.
