Hospitality Newfoundland and Labrador (HNL) has announced that its 2012 silver anniversary scholarship recipients are Whitney Sharpe of Twillingate and Toni Kearney of Conche.

“Whitney and Toni exemplify why the Silver Anniversary Scholarship is so important,” Darlene Thomas, HNL chairwoman said in a news release today. “They are incredibly dedicated individuals that have set their sights high in pursuing their educational goals. HNL is delighted to offer financial support through the scholarship, so we can directly assist these future leaders in building their careers and, at the same time, reducing the financial burden on them and their families.”

Established in 2008 for HNL’s 25th anniversary, the silver anniversary scholarships are supported by the Boone family and the Sparkes family, who both have a long tradition of innovation and leadership within the tourism community. Each year, two silver anniversary scholarships are awarded to a dependant or employee of a current HNL member to assist with the cost of post-secondary education.

The scholarships, valued at $1,500 each, are awarded based on educational goals and direction, academic performance, extra-curricular activities and community involvement.

Whitney Sharpe is the daughter of Deborah Sharpe, owner and operator of the Whitsha Inn Bed and Breakfast in Twillingate.

As a fifth year education student, Whitney Sharpe’s passion for her chosen career was inspired by her involvement in the Tutoring for Tuition program in high school.

Now completing her final year of primary/elementary Education at Memorial University of Newfoundland, Whitney has a goal of someday creating a classroom that is a positive experience for students, as well as somewhere they want to come to learn.

Toni Kearney is an employee of long-time HNL member, Mayflower Inn and Adventures located in Roddickton, NL.

A first-year student at Dalhousie University, Toni plans to complete a Bachelor of Commerce degree. Since the age of 15, Toni has been employed with Mayflower Inn and Adventures in Roddickton, working her way up from roles as a waitress and receptionist to her most current role as marketing assistant. She also worked part-time at the local fish plant and both jobs allowed her to gain valuable work experience as well as some much needed capital to put towards her education.
