The Canadian Hurricane Centre of Environment Canada has issued an advisory on hurricane Sandy that it reports nearly reached major hurricane status Wednesday night as it approached Cuba.

The storm will likely impact parts of eastern Canada early next week.

The centre notes the track and intensity will depend on many changing factors over a period of several days, so it is too early to predict how different regions will be impacted.

The hurricane will be moving through the bahamas with winds in excess of 140 km/h tonight and Friday.

During the weekend, hurricane Sandy is forecast to track northward while remaining at or near hurricane strength.

It will begin to lose some of its tropical characteristics early in the new week, however, is expected to remain a large and powerful cyclone as it shifts toward the east coast of the United States.
