The RNC is warning the public of a number of reported instances of alleged sexual assault in the downtown area of St. John’s.
A news release states that it is believed that women were possibly administered drugs surreptitiously and then sexually assaulted. In all cases, the women were either in public or socializing when the believed drugs were slipped into their drinks or otherwise administered.
The Child Abuse and Sexual Assault Unit of the RNC is actively investigating and have people of interest identified in these cases.
The RNC says the combination of debilitating drugs which affect memory and the stigma associated to sexual assault makes these investigations very challenging.
The RNC is asking the public to be vigilant and to report any suspicious activity while socializing.
Anyone with information regarding these incidents is asked to contact the RNC at 729-8000 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477). You can provide information anonymously on the NL Crime Stoppers Website at www.nlcrimestoppers.com.
The RNC notes the following safety tips: Socialize with trusted friends and stay together; watch your drink being made and do not leave it unattended; and if you feel more intoxicated than expected seek medical help.

While I agree with your comment, we could all be a little bit more cautious, sometimes these things happen even when you are watching your drink VERY carefully! It really irritates me when people imply that the woman's actions are to blame, and they "get themselves in those situations". Why not critisize the law enforcement for not keeping the streets free of these drugs, or the justice system for letting known sex offenders back on the streets after a light strap on the wrist? Please, if you yourself haven't encountered this very traumatizing experience first hand kep your opinions to yourself.
