As of today, anyone driving along the Trans-Canada Highway can stop off about 150 kilometres from St. John's and learn more about the Hebron offshore oil project.
At Nalcor Energy's Bull Arm information centre (Nalcor owns the Bull Arm Fabrication Site), anyone can go into the visitor's building just off the highway and ask questions about the project.
The location was re-opened this morning following brief addresses by lead on the Hebron project, Geoff Parker, and minister Keith Hutchings.
Work is already well underway at the site, Parker said, with about 400 people working on site.
The ground for initial construction of the massive gravity-based structure has been prepared, with construction of a bund wall and the pumping out of water from the area enclosed by the wall.
Parker said he expects the information centre will "help us build and strengthen relationships with surrounding communities."
Hutchings noted the province's equity stake in the project and said about 3,500 people will be employed at the peak of construction.
There have been "significant local contracts" awarded to date, the minister said, adding the local contracts have so far totaled about $300 million.
A tour of the site for local mayors and media followed the speeches.
