The Burin Peninsula Joint Council is asking the provincial government to sign off on a proposal from Ocean Choice International (OCI) that would create 110 jobs at the Fortune plant, but send 75 per cent of OCI’s yellowtail catch out of the province unprocessed.

Darrell Lafosse, chairman of the Burin Peninsula Joint Council, says members of council are concerned the continued closure of the plant and job losses will result if the dispute among government, OCI and the Fish, Food and Allied Workers’ (FFAW) union is not resolved.

The council says if the Fortune plant doesn’t open, it would be a loss of revenue to the region which will have a devastating impact to the residents of Fortune, the surrounding communities and the overall economy of the region.
