A fishing vessel is burning near Goose Island off Ferryland on Newfoundland’s Avalon Peninsula.

Huge black plumes of smoke can be seen from the shoreline and the boat was still burning as of 4 p.m.

According to locals watching the fire there were two people on the boat but they have been safely recovered and taken ashore.

Ferryland RCMP reported this afternoon that shortly after locals started seeing the black smoke boats in the area went to investigate.

The vessel Amanda and Brothers and a speed boat from Calvert rescued two men from a life raft. They were 49 and 17-years-old.

There were no injuries as a result of the fire.

Its cause is still under investigation.
