High winds in the Wreckhouse area of western Newfoundland Thursday night toppled a tractor-trailer travelling on the Trans-Canada Highway.

Channel Port aux Basques RCMP responded to a complaint of a tractor-trailer in the ditch around 10:13 p.m.

Police say winds in the area at the time were gusting over 100 kms an hour. The tractor-trailer, heading west on the Trans-Canada Highway ended up on its side in the ditch. The lone male driver was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The RCMP is reminding motorists, especially those driving high-sided vehicles, to check weather reports for updates before venturing on the roads in the region.
