Two women were sent to hospital for treatment following a two-vehicle accident on the Outer Ring Road in St. John’s Tuesday evening.

Members of the St. John’s Regional Fire Department and paramedics were involved in extracting the two females from a grey Pontiac car that landed in a ditch. Firefighters used equipment to remove the roof in order to help the driver exit the vehicle.

A spokesman for the fire department said the injuries “did not appear to be of a serious nature.” The other vehicle involved in the accident suffered minor damage.

The accident occurred sometime after 7 p.m. in the eastbound lane past the Paradise overpass. Skid marks were visible on the road leading into the ditch. The car landed in the ditch facing west.

A Royal Newfoundland Constabulary officer was witnessed attempting to calm down a man at the scene who appeared to be quite emotional.

The eastbound lane was closed for a portion of Tuesday evening as the investigation into the accident continued.
