Heavy rainfall warning issued for St. John’s, Avalon region

Environment Canada has issued a rainfall warning for St. John’s and parts of the Avalon Peninsula over the next couple of days.

Rainfall accumulations between 60 to 90 millimetres are expected by Friday morning.

According to Environment Canada, a low pressure system is forecast to develop south of Nova Scotia tonight and interact with a stalled cold front over the Avalon Peninsula.

“This interaction will produce rain at times heavy over the Avalon Peninsula tonight and Thursday before tapering off Friday morning,” Environment Canada says on its website. “Rainfall accumulations are expected to be highest for the Southeastern Avalon reaching up to 90 millimetres total by Friday morning. For the southwestern and Northeastern Avalon, total rainfall accumulations are expected to be between 50 and 75 millimetres.”

Environment Canada is advising the public to monitor future forecasts and warnings.
