The RNC responded today to recent complaints about a disturbance at Motor Registration Division (MRD) on Smallwood Drive in Mount Pearl Nov. 2.
At about 2:30 p.m. that day, officers from the RNC responded to a call of a suspicious person at MRD. The staff at MRD advised the responding police officer the driver’s licence of the person called about was suspended. The officer then attempted to stop the individual from getting in a vehicle and, as a result, the individual began causing a disturbance including swinging at officers.
The RNC says the responding officer did not believe the individual in question was intoxicated. The person, however told the officer he suffered from Huntington’s disease which heightened the officer’s concern about his driving.
The suspect attempted to hit the responding police officer and resisted arrest.
The RNC notes that under Canadian law, anyone who suffers from an inability to understand that the nature and consequences of their actions are wrong can enter a plea of “not criminally responsible” in court.
In this case, no such plea was entered. In fact, the individual pleaded guilty to a charge of causing a disturbance.
The RNC has a responsibility to protect the public and in responding to this call, RNC officers attempted to stop an unlicenced and potentially unfit driver from operating a vehicle.
