Conception Bay South needs their own RNC detachment office. Something on the main drag in Manuels... something visible... to remind the little thieves that they're present. (And also to remind the speeders by Villa Nova Plaza that Route 60 isn't a drag racing strip).

What I can't get over is people who leave their keys in their vehicles when they get out and go into a store or business. I saw it several times last summer in Gander and Glovertown. They get out and you hear the bing, bing, bing -key-in-the-ignition alert in the car or truck but the owner ignores it, leaves the keys right there, gets out and goes merrily on his or her way. I was sitting there in my car but I could just as well have been a car thief or part of a gang of thieves just waitng. Nfld. has lost its innocence where crime is concerned so I just can't fathom why the owners of expensive trucks and cars are so cavalier with their keys.

"Carhopping" is what the skells call stealing from vehicles in residential neighbourhoods. Done individually, the thief goes from car to car until finished or frightened off. Done as a team, one keeps watch while the other checks the cars. As a general rule, they will not break the window of a locked vehicle unless they see something of value. With unlocked cars, they will check the glove box and other compartments for coins/cash, CDs, electronics, sunglasses or anything else they can sell for a few bucks. So, lock your car and leave nothing visible in it. Motion sensor lighting aimed at your car is a good thing to have.
