UPDATED: Woman in Flower's Cove called police, school, about husband

A school in Flower’s Cove on the Northern Peninsula was in lockdown mode today and a man was taken into police custody.

According to RCMP media relations officer Sgt. Marc Coulombe, a woman alerted the Flower’s Cove detachment and Canon Richards Memorial Academy about her husband as a safety precaution. The couple have children attending the school, according to an RCMP news release.

Coulombe said police were informed there was “a gentleman that was going to the school who was not welcome.”

Coulombe said officers later located the man, who was co-operative. He was taken into custody and transported to the Port Saunders detachment for questioning.

According to RCMP media relations officer Sgt. Marc Coulombe, the Flower’s Cove detachment received a call from Canon Richards Memorial Academy at 11:30 a.m. advising there was “a gentleman that was going to the school who was not welcome.”

Coulombe said officers later located the man, who was co-operative. He was taken into custody and transported to the Port Saunders detachment for questioning.

Wendy Cunard-Genge, vice-principal of Canon Richards Memorial Academy, directed inquires relating to the incident to Western School District when contacted by The Telegram this afternoon.

Eugene May, an education officer responsible for Safe and Caring Schools with Western School District, said the school was made aware of an incident in the community at 10:20 a.m., at which point it went into a partial lockdown mode. The front door and side entrances to the school were locked, and student movement was restricted.

Based on further conversations with the RCMP at 11:30 a.m., the school had gone into a full lockdown mode. The lockdown was lifted at approximately 12:45 p.m.
