Snow squalls, storm sturge warning for western Newfoundland

Environment Canada is warning residents of Newfoundland’s west coast to watch out for storm surges and snow squalls Monday morning that may lead to flooding and poor driving conditions.

According to a forecast issued shortly after 6 p.m., an intense low pressure system over Labrador is expected to head southwest across Newfoundland overnight Sunday and Monday.

Snow squalls for the Corner Brook area and Gros Morne are expected to produce near-zero visibility conditions and significant snowfall amounts.

A storm surge warning has also been issued for the areas of Parson’s Pond to Hawke’s Bay and Port Saunders to The Straits. A storm surge of 75-100 centimetres is expected to combine with high tide Monday morning to produce “unusally high water levels,” according to Environment Canada.

Large waves and pounding surf combined with the high water levels could cause minor flooding in low-lying coastal areas from Daniel’s Harbour to Eddies Cove.
