A hitchhiker’s destination changed quickly when he accepted a ride Tuesday east of Deer Lake on the Trans-Canada Highway.

An off-duty RCMP officer stopped to offer the 43-year-old man a ride. After learning the man’s identity, the off-duty officer realized the man was wanted on several outstanding warrants on matters dating back to 2006. He arrested him.

The hitchhiker, a former resident of Corner Brook, was transported by Deer Lake RCMP to the Deer Lake detachment where he was held in custody overnight.

He is scheduled for a bail hearing in provincial court in Corner Brook today.

Why on earth would you pick up a hitchhiker in this day and age? Glad the criminal was caught but in these times I would not think it safe to pick anyone up, police officer or not. Risky business.

So, an RCMP officer assisted with someone who was in the process of violating part of the Highway Traffic Act of Newfoundland and Labrador? Hitchhiking, or, soliciting a ride is illegal under section 128.3 of the HTA. It doesn't appear the officier picked him up for this, but lucked into the fact he was wanted for other things.

Section 128 of the HTA deals with people using sidewalks and Section 128.3 states that no one shall "be on a roadway for the purpose of soliciting a ride". Roadway is defined in the HTA as: ""roadway" means the portion of a highway that is improved, designed or ordinarily used for vehicular traffic, but does not include the shoulder unless the shoulder is paved..." So , a hitchhiker on the shoulder of the highway is not in violation of Section 128.3 HTA (as he is not "on a roadway"). Nice try FOGNL but a little more knowledge (or research) of the law is required before you make assinine comments.

So, there are no paved shoulders on the TCH near Deer Lake? Also, a quick google search turns up an article from last year based on a story out of Deer Lake: http://bit.ly/11deYCh with a quote from an RCMP officer stating that its not usually enforce, implying that it is illegal.

Even when you were shown to be wrong you still want to try to make this a blackeye for the cop... Some people need to get a life.
