Ex-justice minister Martin Cauchon blasts Trudeau over gun registry

OTTAWA — Liberal leadership front-runner Justin Trudeau is coming under fire from a former Liberal justice minister over his claim that the long-gun registry was a failure.

Martin Cauchon, who is still pondering whether to run for the leadership himself, says candidates should have the backbone to stand up for Liberal principles and values.

And he says the controversial registry, created by the government of Jean Chretien, is an important Liberal value.

Prime Minister Stephen Harper’s Conservative government killed the registry and destroyed all the data in it — except in Quebec, where the provincial government has gone to court to prevent destruction of the records.

Cauchon acknowledges there were some problems getting the registry off the ground initially, but it was working well by the time Harper scrapped it.

He says he believes a Liberal government should re-create a registry for shot guns and rifles.

All that matters is the Cons will be kicked out in 2015, the recent antics of Peter the Cheater have ensured that no Con will ever be elected again in NL.

So finally a couple of Liberal Leadership hopefuls with enough courage to admit the two billion dollar boondogle which registered all the hunting rifle and shotguns in the Country was a total waste of money is now being chastised by one of the culprits of the registry creation, give me a break.

stand up for liberal principals and values you say, what about standing up for the people you are suppose to represent. remember liberal mp scott simms bonavista-gander-grandfalls-windsor who flip-floped on the gun registry and voted in favour to keep it against the wishes of those he was suppose to represent. he put those same liberal principals and values ahead of the people, something that i and many in his riding will not forget come the next election in 2015.

The useless Gun Registry is dead and long may it remain so. R.I.P. you money grabbing tax waste. Let the democratic process, now fulfilled illuminate the path for would-be leadership contenders.
