The RCMP is investigating a number of complaints of illegal dumping around the communities of Isle Aux Morts and Burnt Islands on the province’s southwest coast.

A news release notes that over the last couple of months police have been monitoring a number of areas where the illegal dumping is occurring.

The Channel Port aux Basques RCMP has been working with the town councils of both communities in an effort to catch those responsible for the illegal dumping.

RCMP remind the public that fines range from $500 to $10,000 for persons convicted of illegal dumping, and from $1,000 to $1,000,000 in the case of a corporation, which includes a municipality.

Police are requesting anyone with information on this illegal activity is asked to contact Channel Port Aux Basques RCMP at 695-2149 or Crimestoppers.

Every back road, ATV trail or anywhere one can dump is what people do..................just look around and there is litter everywhere on the roads and trash piles in the woods. Solution $1000 fines and jail time - no liberal judge exceptions.

I'm guessing that the ones dumping their garbage are the same people who claim to be proud Newfoundlanders and who defend the province and its inhabitants from anyone who is at all critical of it or them. The actions of these criminals say plenty about what they think of NL i.e. a big dump. The fact that these fines are so paltry suggests that the courts agree with them.

To the person who was driving the car in front of me on Tuesday night at 11 p.m. on the Southern Shore Highway that threw out a pizza box, coffee cups and french fry box, you should be ashamed of yourself. You turned in at the Graveyard Road, Bay Bulls. You were obviously going home, why not bring your garbage with you. It would take all of 2 minutes to gather it up and put it in the garbage. I was tempted to follow you but I was a female driving alone. Have you no pride in your Province.
