OTTAWA — A Conservative MP says there’s no connection between violence against women and more changes to Canada’s gun-control laws being considered by the Harper government.

Eve Adams says the two issues are not related.

The parliamentary secretary to the veterans minister made the comments while recalling her thoughts about the Ecole Polytechnique massacre, which occurred 23 years ago today.

When asked about a media report that the Harper government is considering loosening Canada’s gun-control laws further, Adams replied that the two issues are unrelated.

The Toronto Star report says the Tories are looking at sweeping recommendations from an influential government firearms advisory committee.

The proposals include reclassifying “prohibited” firearms such as certain handguns and assault weapons as “restricted,” and extending the duration of gun-owner licenses from five to 10 years.

“This has nothing to do with violence against women,” Adams said as she left the House of Commons.

“Men will perpetrate violence against women with guns, with hatred, with ignorance,” she said.

“And that really is what we need to clamp down on as an entire country.”
