The RNC said today it is concerned about two reported incidents of sexual assault in the downtown and centre city area of St. John’s and is advising the public of a potential risk presented by an unidentified offender.
This person may be responsible for one or more assaults in the downtown area.
On Dec. 2, the RNC issued a media release informing the community of a violent assault in the Bonaventure Avenue area in the early morning hours of Dec. 1. The RNC is investigating the possibility that this Dec. 1 incident may be linked to a sexually motivated incident in the same general area of downtown St. John’s.
The second reported incident was not previously known to the RNC and a date has not been established, but investigators believe it may have occurred within the past month.
The suspect is described as being approximately 30-40 years of age, tall, with a slim build and dark complexion.
Although the investigation is still developing, the RNC wishes to inform the community, particularly women who may be walking alone late at night, that there may be an increased risk to safety in that area.
The RNC is advising people to be vigilant and take precautions.
Anyone with information regarding these incident or any similar incidents is asked to contact the RNC at 729-8000 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477). You can provide information anonymously on the NL Crime Stoppers Website at www.nlcrimestoppers.com
