• She was seven years old when he first molested her. Forty years later, the woman who endured a decade of sexual abuse at the hands of her stepfather told a judge how it haunts her to this day. “I’m 47 years old and I’m a survivor of child sexual abuse,” she said as she began reading her victim impact statement during the man’s sentencing hearing Wednesday at provincial court in St. John’s.

• The owner of the remaining KFC franchises in St. John’s said he’s letting his franchise agreements expire because KFC wanted too much money in upgrades. Dave Hefferman, owner of Chelsea Food Services, which is selling its seven St. John’s-area KFC franchises to Mary Brown’s, said it was a tough decision to give up his locations, but he couldn’t come to an agreement with KFC parent company Yum Brands. “I just felt that at this point in time, some of the things going on with Yum all over the world, it was not the right the time to invest,” he said.

• In tallying its year, Marine Atlantic says passengers were down but commercial traffic was up. “If you look back at the summer of 2011, which is what we’re talking about ... drive traffic was down all throughout Atlantic Canada,” said vice-president of customer experience Donald Barnes, noting the vast majority of Marine Atlantic’s passenger traffic comes during the summer months.
